Three Boy Scouts from Troop 7 recently were honored with the Dr. Bernard Harris Supernova Award.
Kamuela Santa Maria, Logan Kuniyuki and Kawaiola Santa Maria are the first scouts to receive this prestigious award in the Pukahi (Puna-Ka‘u-Hilo) District. The Boy Scouts of America’s Nova Awards program started June 1, 2012, with the goal of bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life for young people.
Cub Scouts ages 8 and older, Boy Scouts and Venturers can earn the Nova Awards and more advanced Supernova Awards. The Nova program also connects with other Scout accomplishments while focusing on the STEM fields.
To earn the Supernova Award, the three Scouts built solar boats and bottle rockets, observed the Hawaiian hoary bats, flew and learned about airplanes, raised and showed livestock animals such as goats and pigs, and did climate observations at the Mauna Loa Observatory.
